Regional  Education for  Sustainable Development (ESD) Day celebrations

Lake Victoria Catchment Environment Education Programme (LVCEEP) under NatureUganda in conjuction with World Wide Fund (WWF)  organized an annual regional ESD day on 08th July, 2011 in Mwanza Tanzania to raise public awareness on the importance of EE/ESD.  The day provided an opportunity to publicize the work and initiatives of the communities, schools and stake holders working with WWF - LVCEEP.  WWFs partners from Kenya Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, from Uganda.  NatureUganda and Tanzania WWF Musoma, and other government organizations working around Lake Victoria were present for the ESD day.

The ESD Day was organized to create awareness on the importance of all stakeholders taking the responsibility of protecting the environment and at the same time improving their livelihoods through activities that promote sustainable development. The Day highlighted the importance and the roles or education for sustainable development to the individual, Schools, Communities and Societies. Participants included schools, colleges and the communities living within the Lake Victoria Catchment.
Participants from Uganda included the winners of the ESD Art/model, best greening practices, community Best income generating activities and best family practices from Makerere, Kiswera, Kitaasa, Butende, Kaswa, Kisojo, Kisambya, Karwenyi Primary Schools, St. Anthony Kayunga, Blessed Sacrament Kimanya Seconday Schools, Ndegeya Core PTC, Kabulasoke PTC.
 WWF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional programme Officer was the guest of Honor.  Representative from Uganda were the NatureUganda Administrative Officer Mr. Geofrey Akule, the LVCEEP – Uganda, Project executant Mrs Ada N Lesale, LVCEEP core team members Uganda:

  • Mr.  Hezron Kayinga DIS Kalungu District.
  • Mr. Charles Mugisa DIS Kyenjojo District.
  • Mrs. Joyce N. Kawooya/ Director Kaswa Primary School and Community Leaders
  • The RAC chairperson from Uganda Dr. Daniel Babikwa

Representatives from Kenya were, the Regional Nairobi WWF – ESARPO (Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Programme Office),  Directors from WWF, the regional coordinator Mrs. Zipporah Musyoki and the Wild Life Clubs of Kenya, project executant Mr. Edward  Mwendwa and LVCEEP Core team. Community Group winners included:-

  • Transmara Community Group
  • Nyagidha Community Group
  • Ndurio Community Group
  • Lieta Community Group
  • Enego Community Group

Tanzania was represented by the RAC member Mrs. Muyungi Abella from NEMC and the LVCEEP Project executants Mrs. Praxeda Machiwa, LVCEEP Core team members from Tanzania among others. The ceremony included entertaining of the participants by schools, communities from the region, an exhibition for ESD best practices and ESD best art models from schools and communities. Community groups Included:-

  • Pemba- Uzalishaji Community Group
  • Kinesi- Kibouki Community Group
  • Kirumi-Kilimo Kwanza Community Group
  • Kinesi- Jiendeleze Women Group
  • Dett- Jazirika Community Group
  • Kuruya- Juhudi Community Group

Awards to the ESD winners included

  1. Trophies to schools and communities
  2. Certificates for 1st , 2nd and 3rd  positions for all categories in schools and communities
  3. Items like sewing machines, Watering Cans, Wheel burrows, fishing nets to the winning schools and communities

The ceremony was closed by the project executant, Tanzania, Mrs. Praxeda Machiwa. She expressed her sincere gratitude to all guest, the organizers, and participants from schools and communities from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.  She added that ESD Day strengthens partnerships and togetherness amongst all beneficiaries and urged everybody to continue with the co-operation between the schools, Communities and Government.
All in all, ESD Day was a success for the Ugandan Team as most of the awards were won by LVCEEP Uganda. Congratulations!!
