Uganda commemorates World Wetlands Day 2012
February 2, 2012 marked the 16th World Wetlands Day (WWD) the theme "Wetlands and Tourism". It marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Each year since 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general, and the Ramsar Convention in particular. »New to Uganda: Vermiculated Fishing-Owl and Grey Pranticole The Ugandan checklist will be increasing by two after ratification by the East African Rarities Committee (EARC). This will take the number of species recorded in Uganda to an impressive 1059 (This total includes 27 species which have been square-bracketed in the Uganda Bird Atlas as un-proven) There are over 2250 species recorded on the African continent (Birds of Africa Vol.VII) and the total list of Uganda represents nearly half (47%) of all species recorded on the continent.Read more...
»In the press: Lives at risk as Scoul defies Nema, dumps waste in Mabira
Four years after it was asked to stop, the Sugar Corporation of Uganda (Scoul) continues to discharge untreated waste into River Musamya, which flows through Mabira Forest. A water quality assessment report done by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation in 2007 proved that waste from the factory exceeds acceptable standards and was damaging plant and animal life around the river and contaminating water sources used by local residents.
