Nature walks are some of the oldest activities of NatureUganda. During nature walks members are guided (by Specialists) to move through various sites while observing different taxa (plants, mammals, herps, dudus, birds) of their interest. Through these activities, members are exposed to a variety of conservation initiatives. The specialists take the members through various techniques of observing and identifying different species. As the members walk they listen and look out for different © NU File Photo: Members during the nature walk species and general information which is then recorded as part of other NU monitoring programmes. Each month’s walk focuses on a different activitity. Several resources are used during the nature walks; for example, Birders use binoculars to see birds high in the trees or out on the water. Books such as the 'Field guide to the Birds of East Africa' by Stevenson and Fanshawe, and the 'Birds of Africa South of the Sahara' by Ian Sinclair and Peter Ryan, are used by participants to identify birds. For the butterfly lovers, the book 'Butterflies of Uganda' by Nanny Carder and Laura Tindimubona, is available for use. All nature walks take approximately two hours, depending on location and weather conditions. To participate, check out our activity calender or contact us for more information. Regular emails about the upcoming nature walks are usually sent out to all members.
