NatureUganda conducts a range of membership activities aimed at promoting the understanding, appreciation and conservation of nature. We ensure that majority of members participate in all these activities.
Explorers Programme
NatureUganda in conjunction with Wildlife Clubs of Uganda are running a wildlife exploration programme for children in Uganda. The programme is intended to produce a cadre of young nature lovers among Ugandan schools. This exciting programme aims at introducing Ugandan children to understanding the importance of various aspects of nature like birds, plants, butterflies, herpes, Dudus (Insects) etc at an early stage.
Excursions/Expeditions
These are also membership events organised to particular conservation sites of interest but members stay for more than one day. It can be an overnight or more nights depending on the attractiveness/activities to engage in at the site. This is different from nature walks where members go early in the morning, have awalk for two hours and come back. The cost for a particular trip which includes transport, meals and accommodation is always communicated prior to allow those who can afford to pay and be taken.
Monthly Nature walks
Nature walks are some of the oldest activities of NatureUganda. During nature walks members are guided (by Specialists) to move through various sites while observing different taxa (plants, mammals, herps, dudus, birds) of their interest. Through these activities, members are exposed to a variety of conservation initiatives. The specialists take the members through various techniques of observing and identifying different species. As the members walk they listen and look out for different species and general information which is then recorded as part of other NU monitoring programmes. |

Each month’s walk focuses on a different activitity. Several resources are used during the nature walks; for example, Birders use binoculars to see birds high in the trees or out on the water. Books such as the 'Field guide to the Birds of East Africa' by Stevenson and Fanshawe, and the 'Birds of Africa South of the Sahara' by Ian Sinclair and Peter Ryan, are used by participants to identify birds. For the butterfly lovers, the book 'Butterflies of Uganda' by Nanny Carder and Laura Tindimubona, is available for use. All nature walks take approximately two hours, depending on location and weather conditions.
To participate, check out our activity calender or contact us for more information. Regular emails about the upcoming nature walks are usually sent out to all members. |

| Membership Benefits |
| |
We strive to promote the understanding, appreciation and conservation of nature. We speak out for biodiversity and the people, tackling problems that threaten our environment. Nature is beautiful and when you become a member, you are joining over two thousand other people who are helping us keep it that way. Most members aren't experts, but ordinary people united by a desire to see wildlife flourish in their natural habitats.
As a membership Society, we rely on the support of members to continue our work of conserving biodiversity. Here are some examples of what we do with the support of our members:
-
Research and monitoring targeting Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and Important Bird Areas (IBAs) through water fowl counts, specific project level monitoring, Site Support Groups (SSGs) and working groups. NU is involved in conservation activities to save endangered species and improve management of site or habitats where they occur. We work with people to improve their livelihoods and sustainability of the initiative.
-
Create awareness and understanding of conservation issues through nature walks, public talks, school explorer’s programme, publications, films, excursions and general public awareness. We try to help everybody to enjoy the natural world and learn more about it.
